What Senior Professionals Need When the Conversation Goes Off Script

Senior leader conversations
Learn how senior professionals can handle conversations that move beyond their expertise, with insights from real-world role play, feedback and experiential learning.

Senior professionals are often very comfortable when they are talking about what they know. But what happens when a client conversation moves beyond their usual area of expertise?

You cannot always prepare for the direction a conversation will take. A question can move into unfamiliar territory, a discussion can become more challenging or the person across the table can introduce an issue you were not expecting.

At that point, expertise alone is not enough. You need to know how to manage the conversation.

We saw this in action last week

Last week, we worked with a group of directors preparing to take the next step towards partnership.

As part of the programme, we ran a client conversation designed to challenge their ability to manage a discussion that moved beyond their usual remit.

We observed each participant in the conversation and then provided individual feedback. This was followed by a 30-minute impact session with each person, giving them an opportunity to reflect on how they had approached the interaction and the impact they were having.

The exercise highlighted an important shift that happens as professionals become more senior. The conversation is no longer simply about demonstrating what you know.

It is about how you manage the interaction when you cannot rely entirely on your expertise.

This is a common challenge for senior professionals

Moving into a more senior role often means having conversations where there is no straightforward answer.

You may need to influence a client, respond to a difficult question, navigate disagreement or manage a conversation that moves into an area outside your remit.

The expectation is still that you will remain credible, composed and effective. That requires more than communication knowledge.

It requires the ability to listen, adapt and respond in the moment. It also requires practice.

You cannot rehearse every possible conversation. But you can practise how you respond when a conversation becomes challenging or unpredictable.

That is where realistic scenarios and role play can be particularly valuable.

Instead of simply discussing how to handle a difficult conversation, professionals can experience one, receive feedback and understand how their approach affects the interaction.

Practice before the conversation matters

For senior professionals, some of the most important communication skills are developed through experience.

Role play creates an opportunity to test those skills in realistic situations without the consequences of getting it wrong with a real client, colleague or stakeholder.

It allows participants to practise handling uncertainty, responding to challenge and adapting their approach. And with targeted feedback and coaching, they can take those lessons back into the conversations that matter.

The goal is not to give people a script. It is to help them become more effective when the conversation does not follow one.

The conversations that matter most rarely go to plan

Senior professionals will inevitably find themselves in conversations where they do not have complete control over the direction or outcome.

The ability to stay effective in those moments can have a significant impact on relationships, influence and leadership.

That is why practising these situations matters.

At Actors in Industry, we use role play, realistic scenarios, interactive exercises and coaching to help professionals build the skills they need for conversations where the stakes are higher and the outcome matters.
